March 25th and 26th begin the celebration of the 40th Maine Maple Sunday Weekend®. Maine maple sugar producers are ready for the boil! Across Maine you can see the steam from the sugarhouse evaporators streak skyward and fill the air with the aroma of maple syrup being made.
2023 marks a fresh start for Mainers to visit their local sugarhouse for a fun family adventure in the great outdoors. Spend the day touring the sugarbush on foot or by a horse drawn wagon. Learn how 40 gallons of sap gets turned into 1 gallon of sweet maple syrup. There will also be Easter egg hunts for the kids. Each sugarhouse offers different adventures. You will enjoy the diversity of flavors each sugar maker brings to your breakfast! Maine maple syrup and other maple products are good alternatives for health-conscious Mainers. Shelley Bacon from the Bacon Farm in Sidney is happy to share the stats on how maple products are full of vitamins and are lower calories than regular sugar or sweeteners.
Shelley and her staff have developed some unique, tasty offerings to tempt your taste buds. A smoked BBQ maple rub adds a distinctive flavor to your pulled pork and grilling favorites. Maple pepper, coated nuts and cotton candy are only a few of their maple offerings.
Doug Tibbetts from Raider’s Sugarhouse in China is a maple tree conservator. He has 100-year-old maple trees he still taps each year. His joy is sharing the secrets of the sugarbush. His wife, Gail, and their friends, Bob and Nancy, keep the kids busy with their annual Easter Egg Hunt both days.
All sugar makers including the Wilson family in Albion work together when the call goes out that the sap is running. The race is on to boil! The sap must be processed within 24- 48 hours of being collected. The season is about 6 weeks long. They all told me this year’s warm winter may start the sap flowing a little early but probably won’t extend the season. Warm days and cold nights are the key to keeping the sap flowing.
