September offers a personal look at one of Maine’s true forward thinkers, a business entrepreneur and all-around good guy! Todd Smith, is a mild mannered, in the moment listener with a big smile, ready to help you meet your company’s challenges.
Maine Fire Equipment Company is located at 25 S. Factory Street in Skowhegan, Maine. The business has grown steadily for 19 years. They currently provide fire extinguisher maintenance, inspections, recharging, training and sales to his commercial and industrial accounts across the state. Todd keeps two full-time employees, Jeff and Joel, on the road daily just servicing accounts. They visit fire departments, mills, and businesses daily to update their equipment to keep them in compliance with state and federal safety requirements.
Todd began his fire training when he was in the military. Upon his return to Maine, he continued using his skills at Madison Paper Industries. Being in the safety field, he updated their equipment and provided safety training. Other companies and fire departments requested his time and talents too. That’s when Maine Fire Equipment Company began in 2003. Todd worked on the road, repairing and refilling fire extinguishers throughout the Central Maine area. He developed safety training programs for businesses and fire departments.
In 2008, Todd opened his store at 25 S. Factory Street. He credits the growth of Maine Fire Equipment to his customers. When he and his staff were out servicing their accounts, customers would ask if he could provide OSHA approved industrial first aid kits, high visibility reflective vests and clothing, fire and police uniforms, fire escape ladders, fire and carbon monoxide alarms, fire department hand tools, axes, LED Flashlights and so much more. Todd and staff worked to fill the needs!
While growing into the apparel business, existing customers would ask if they could provide quality scrubs and workwear. After some research, a nationally known brand of scrubs, Koi, Wink , and Carhartt scrubs became available at the Maine Fire Equipment Store. He found hairdressers loved them too as they repelled hair. Another popular line of clothing is the 5.11 line of public safety apparel. Their clothing is carried and used to print and embroider on.
Maine Fire Equipment’s fastest growing department is embroidery and printing. Todd’s customers once again requested logos and names be embroidered on the apparel they ordered. So Todd, invested in the newest embroidery equipment and direct to garment printing equipment! Jessica, Emma, and Alivia handle orders from one to hundreds of pieces. Teams, small businesses and families personalized orders are also welcomed.
Skowhegan is home to Todd and his highly-qualified and enthusiastic staff, all enjoying their friendly-family atmosphere dedicated to pleasing their customers and keeping Todd smiling too! While browsing through their store, I found many unique and useful Christmas gift possibilities. Fire Extinguishers, first aid kits for your car, and LED flashlights are available. One-of-a-kind embroidered or printed hats, jackets, t-shirts and sweatshirts add that personal touch everyone will enjoy! Skowhegan River Hawks garments and other school spirit items, and hats are available too.
