Pleau’s Market at 10 China Road in Winslow has been feeding the locals since 1961. William (Bill) Pleau bought the market in 1977. Bill took his job personally, customizing the market to fit his community’s needs. Their motto is “We might not have everything you want, but we have everything you need!” Winslow is proud to claim this community “Hometown Treasure!”
Bill’s son, Rob, recalls they had only twelve hours notice that their market was in the path of the “500 Year Flood of ’87!” Everyone worked together to remove as much food as possible. Still much was lost. There is a line on the side wall showing the high water mark. They had no flood insurance and were 6 months from paying off their mortgage. They started again. Pleau’s suffered another setback in the “Ice Storm of ’98.” When their power was lost, a call was made to Winslow Fire Department. Rescue trucks were filled with meat and produce. They served national guard troops, CMP crews, fire, rescue and ambulance crews from around the area, along with Winslow citizens who were fed 24/7 throughout the crisis.
Pleau’s ran a seven days a week business until William’s passing in 2016. Rob then purchased the market from his mom and welcomed in the third generation of Pleaus into the family business. His daughter, Stephanie, is busy creating new recipes and perfecting favorites for cookies, scones, breads and pies. His son, Daniel, is following in his dad’s footsteps as a master meat cutter.
Pleau’s fills custom orders as well as keeping their expansive meat cooler stocked for grilling needs. All meats are processed on site. Rob told me they specialize in high end meats. Pineland Farms provides in-state locally grown Angus prime beef directly to Pleau’s Market. Everyday they offer several different Rib eyes including bone-in Tomahawk Rib eyes. Australia’s Wagyu Beef is usually available. Call to order your favorite cuts and they will be waiting for you when you arrive. Discounts are available on bulk orders of ten pounds or more. Fresh ground hamburg, chicken, pork, ribs, rubs and barbecue sauces are ready for those summer evenings on the deck.
Rob, Stephanie and Daniel credit their staff for creating a family atmosphere. They encourage customers to ask for special requests and their favorite foods. The staff and Rob credit their “Just do it” attitude during the pandemic by providing customized service to their patrons. They allowed only five shoppers in the store at one time. They sanitized everything all day long. By working together, they never ran out of food or toilet paper and other essentials.
Pleau’s Deli is well known in Winslow. Their pizza, fresh sliced deli meats and cheeses are customer favorites. “MEALS TO GO” are three words that can make your day! If you are asking “What’s For Dinner?” Pleau’s has you covered! Fresh-baked chicken pot pies, Shepherd pies, Mac and cheese casseroles and daily specials offer scrumptious evening meals. Freshly made in-house garden and Greek salads round out your dinner.
Pleau’s is also an agency liquor store offering beer and wine and soft drinks to fill all of your beverage needs. If you live anywhere in Central Maine, stop by Pleau’s today and experience fast, friendly service with a smile!
