When the gentle August breezes meet the twilight shadows on the stone terrace you know you're in for an exquisite dining experience at "OPA", the Greek word for "Party" located at 139 Main Street in Waterville, Maine.
OPA is a unique Greek & Mediterranean Restaurant that transports you into a quiet friendly relaxing atmosphere to let your taste buds jump for joy with anticipation!
"OPA" is the love child of a local Greek family of restaurateurs, son, Sotirios, sister, Polyxeni, and Mama, Anna Gudis. Sotirios, affectionately called "Gudis" by staff and patrons has taken on this project full steam ahead. He enjoys mingling with his guests highlighting their menu.
He is a 29 year old entrepreneur. The twinkle in his eye and boyish grin welcome local diners and visitors from over the USA to celebrate the " WOW FACTOR" of dining Mediterranean Style.
The family has designed their menu to include Greek Comfort Foods and Mediterranean Cuisine. Plus Nightly Specials featuring Maine Seafood including fresh Lobster, Scallops and Calamari, when available.
Moussa, Gyros, Melitzanza and Arni round out the meat and vegetarian options. All prepared by their skilled kitchen staff overseen by Gudis and Mama, who speak Greek naturally, while cooking.
Let's not forget "OPA'S DESSERTS!".... Gudis explains that is Mama's specialty. She makes these " Greek Glykas" with such ease. Kataifi, Portokalopita,(Orange Pie), Deconstructed Baklava and Seasonal Cheesecake individually sized or get a "Dessert Sampler'' to share for the whole table. A yummy ending for the perfect dining experience!
OPA has refreshed their summer cocktails. Try a Strawberry Hibiscus Gin Spritzer, or Margaritas…… Wines and …. Brews.
Covid, presented OPA with many challenges. They closed for 2 weeks. During that time they reconfigured their services. They used their PPP Money to keep staff employed, changed to 'Family Style Meals to Go' service. "Most of our staff stayed on,'' Gudis said ( with a tear in his eye) "We have the most amazing staff and this experience has brought us all closer."
Thanks to our local patrons who have been patient not only during Covid, but also with Main Street construction. Parking and sidewalk navigation have been challenging but reservations for outside seating are very popular.
I asked Gudis about his future plans? He smiled an impish smile and said "I have Big Plans! A new 25 person Event Room and a Bourbon Bar are just a couple of ideas in the works."
OPA is open Monday - Wednesday - 3pm to 8pm,
Thursday - Saturday -12pm to 9pm. Closed Sunday.
